Setting out on your first camping trip can be an exhilarating experience, filled with the promise of adventure and connection with nature. However, for those new to the camping scene, the prospect of venturing into rural areas can also be daunting especially for BIPOC. Part of our mission at the NM Freedom Festival is to open spaces and provide guidance on how to travel to rural areas as a person of color, keeping our perspectives and concerns in mind.
With the right preparation and mindset, your camping expedition can be a resounding success regardless of how green you are! Here are five essential tips to help you navigate the wilderness with confidence:
-
Plan and Prepare Thoroughly: Before setting off on your camping adventure, take the time to thoroughly plan and prepare for your trip. Research your chosen campsite to understand its facilities, terrain, and any potential hazards. Make a checklist of essential items such as a tent, sleeping bags, cooking equipment, and appropriate clothing for the weather you're expecting. Ventusky has been the most accurate weather prediction site we've found! Ensure that you have adequate food supplies and plan your meals in advance. Familiarize yourself with local regulations, gas stations, grocery stores, and wildlife safety guidelines to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. It would be extra beneficial to share this information with anyone you're traveling with ahead of time so they also have time to adequately prepare.
-
Pack Wisely and Lightly: When packing for your camping trip, it's essential to find your personal balance between being prepared and traveling light. Opt for lightweight and compact gear whenever possible to minimize the strain on your back while hiking to your campsite. Prioritize the essentials such as shelter, food, water, and navigation tools. Remember to pack versatile clothing suitable for layering to accommodate changing weather conditions. Don't forget to bring along essential safety items such as a first aid kit, flashlight, and emergency supplies.
-
Embrace the Outdoors: One of the joys of camping is immersing yourself in nature and disconnecting from daily life. Embrace the outdoors by taking the time to explore your surroundings, whether it's hiking along scenic trails, swimming in a pristine lake, or stargazing under a clear night sky. Be mindful of minimizing your impact on the environment and respecting wildlife habitats. Take the opportunity to unplug from technology and savor the beauty in the simplicity of life by connecting with our first mother.
-
Be Prepared for Rural Travel: Traveling to rural areas for camping often involves navigating unfamiliar terrain and encountering limited amenities. Prepare for the journey by having a trusted mechanic inspect your vehicle , check for essentials like a spare tire & tools, jumper cables, and a full tank of gas. Plan your route in advance, have a map or GPS navigation system on hand, and save those directions offline since mobile phone reception may be unreliable in remote areas. Be prepared for unexpected delays or detours and have contingency plans in place.
- Respect Local Communities: As you venture into rural areas for your camping adventure, it's essential to respect the local communities and their way of life, starting with animals and nature. Observe all posted signs and follow designated trails to avoid trespassing on private property. Practice responsible camping etiquette by disposing of waste properly and leaving your campsite cleaner than you found it. Engage with locals respectfully and support small businesses in the area whenever possible. *For people of color: Trust your instincts! If you come across a business that seems questionable or you're not completely comfortable in TRUST your instincts and act accordingly to ensure your safety.
By using these five tips the next time, or first time, you travel you'll be more prepared and can move with confidence and enjoy a memorable outdoor experience.
Remember to plan ahead, pack wisely, embrace the outdoors, be prepared for rural travel, and respect local communities. Moving with the energy of community, honor, and preparation, your first camping trip can be the beginning of many more adventures in the great outdoors and connecting deeper with Mother Earth and begin your journey back to the root of life!
Happy camping!
